Notes

  • George was on active duty with the U.S. Navy from December 4, 1917 to January 16, 1919 as Seaman 2C.  He also was in the U.S. Naval Reserves, from which he was discharged on May 29, 1921.

According to the 1920 Census, his occupation was salesman.  After World War II, George's sister, Helen, and nieces Thelma and Deborah moved into his rooming house for almost a year.

According to the 1930 Census, George was a lawyer engaged in a general practice and was a World War I veteran.

George was admitted to the bar on June 27, 1929.  He got into serious trouble representing the Weislers, the family of Archie's wife, Gertie.  He lost a case for them and lost a lot of money in the process.  They sued him for breach of contract and negligence.  George won at the trial court level, but the Appellate Division of the New York Supreme Court reversed on appeal in June 1935.  In August 1935, the lower court entered a $6,200 judgment against George.

Family lore has it that the Weislers were ready to forget about everything if George would agree to marry their daughter, Mollie (who was apparently quite homely).  George refused and the family pursued proceedings against him.  George's experience with the Weislers caused him to voluntarily give up the practice of law (there is no record of his having been disbarred).  He then went into the printing business.  Thelma remembers him as well-loved and respected.
