Notes

  • According to Harry's Certificate of Naturalization, he lived at 89 Hackney Road, London, England in 1903.  Harry was involved in manufacturing hats (his occupation in the 1891 and 1901 England Censuses and his Certificate of Naturalization was listed as tailor and shopkeeper).  The occupation listed in his marriage certificate was clothier.  According to the 1901 Census, Harry had a 16 year-old servant named Fanny Hayfield.

According to his grandson, Alex Pelican, Harry was innovative, moving from his tailoring background to backing various new enterprises. He was the first shopkeeper to keep his shop window alight all all night with gas light and was much talked about in London, particularly by persons who felt that improving trading by night light was breaching public mores. He went on the start a garage with space for  fifty cars and moved into employing drivers to allow the hiring of cars for journeys.  Harry expanded his tailoring business, first by tailoring at home, then in a shop made to measure followed by opening five shops over London.

Harry visited the U.S. before the outbreak of World War II.  He deposited money in U.S. banks, and Moe and Essie offered to take Harry's children in so they could get away from the fighting in England.15
