Notes

  • Shirley  graduated from Syracuse University and worked in the General Promotion department of the National Broadcasting Company from
1939 through 1941. As a guide, she conducted some of America's first
television behind-the-scenes tours, demonstrating and describing the art and science of early TV, then known as sound broadcasting. She specialized in
describing how sound effects are created, how scores of stations from coast to cost are hooked up with split second accuracy and how studios go on and off the air.

In 1942, she joined the Publicity Department of the National Concert and Artists Corporation, working under the direction of Philip Kerby. At NCAC,
she provided promotion, advertising and publicity for artists and entertainers trying to break into the entertainment field. Among her clients
was Sol Hurok, whose attractions were booked exclusively by NCAC at the
    time.

After World War II, Shirley and her husband, Simon, moved to Kearny, where she helped him run his medical practice. In addition to writing and directing plays and musicals for community groups, she created an organization called Promteens, where local youth gathered on weekends and danced to the tunes of the 1950's.

After her husband's death in 1968, she continued volunteer work with Channel
13, the Audubon Society, the AAUW and other non-profit organizations. She
was an avid traveler, visiting over 50 countries world-wide, including a
rafting trip to Costa Rica when she was 88. At age 90, she won the Sigma Chi Parent Weekend Dance Contest at Cornell University with her grandson.2
