Notes

  • After graduating from the American Institute of Optometry in Manhattan, Ben opened a storefront office, but found it very difficult to build a practice from patients walking in off the street.  Then came the depression, and Ben went to work as a bookkeeper for the New York City Finance Department, Sales Tax Bureau, in Brooklyn.  Ben retired from his City position in June 1959.

Ben's occupation was listed as bookkeeper in the 1900 Census.  According to the 1920 Census, Ben, who was still living at home, was a jobber working on his own account.

According to the 1930 Census, Ben was an accountant for the City and was a World War I veteran.  He rented his apartment for $60 a month.
