According to Bill Litant, Nona was a very sharp person and worked for many years as a legal and then medical secretary. She also took courses in anthropology - a field she would have liked to be in, had women been more encouraged to be professionals in those days.

According to Karyn Michaels, after Nona and Philip retired, they moved to California from NYC and started making jewelry in Berkeley during the "flower children era." Nona embraced all of the modern ideas of the time.14,7
