Notes

  • According to the 1910 and 1920 Censuses, Albert's address was 1212 40th St. Brooklyn, New York.  His occupation was listed in the 1910 Census as trunk manufacturing.  Albert owned his own home.  Albert's other addresses were: 418 W. 46th Street, NY, NY; 141 Park Row, NY, NY (he lived above his store both here and at his next address); 112 Park Row, NY, NY; and 5413 17th Avenue, Brooklyn, NY.  His parents came from Austria and spoke Yiddish.

According to the 1930 Census, Albert owned his own home, which had a value of $8,000.  Both his parents were born in Poland (the place where Krakow was then situated) and spoke Yiddish.  He had a 27 year-old servant named Anita Hanson, who was born in Norway.

Albert was originally named "Serul" (Samuel).  He was very ill as a child (he had many siblings but none survived childhood) and was "sold" (tradition/superstition) in name only to a woman who was raising a large family and renamed Alter (which means old).  This became "Albert" in England, the name of the reigning king.

Albert spoke Yiddish, "Slavish," German, Polish and, later, English, fluently.  He got a job as an interpreter on a boat and set out to see the world.  In England, he met Deborah through her sister, Fannie.  According to Madeline, Deborah was the opposite of Fannie.  Deborah was fair with blond hair, quiet and reserved.  Fannie was dark skinned with black hair, lively and outgoing.  According to Madeline, Albert was attracted to Fannie but chose Deborah (those were the days when "shyness" got the man).  Deborah and Albert became engaged in London.  After the engagement, he continued his voyages.  He settled in the United States and then sent for Deborah.  Deborah and Albert were married in the summer of 1882.  All of Deborah's family came to the wedding which was held in a ballroom, above a restaurant, on Delancy Street in Manhattan.  After the wedding, Deborah's family returned to London.  The next year, they came to see their first grandchild and niece, Ray.

In New York, Albert was a leather goods worker for Wolf Co.  In the early 1900s, he opened a factory at 101 Park Row in New York City where he manufactured and sold luggage and trunks, as well as jewelers' cases and trays.  With the advent of World War I, all European travel was prohibited and his business suffered.  He rented a smaller place where he stayed for a short time and then closed his business.  Much later, he was a real estate broker, opening an office under the name of "Boro Realty Company" on New Utrecht Avenue and 48th Street in Brooklyn.  He retired in 1930, the year of the Great Depression.  He longed to continue his travel, but it was not to be.  His wife was ailing, money was tight and he, who had known good health all his life, had an accident which tore his heart muscle (he cranked his Oldsmobile car and it kicked back).

Madeline described Albert as a hard-working and sweet man, loved and respected by all.  He was light-hearted and tolerant and a dedicated father.  He was not orthodox in religion but was observant.  According to Helen's headstone, Albert's Hebrew name was Avraham.32,33,3,34
